Unnecessary cord tie at hem

Love the actual coat, fit is perfect. Fabric looks and feels really good quality. The dipped hem at the back is fine but i cant understand what the tie cord at the back of the hem is for. If i pull it to make it tighter/shorter it just wrinkles and misshapes the hemline. If i leave the cord be it is just an unnecessary nuisance, if I'm in heavy rain it will just become a really wet cord. I'm thinking of cutting this cord out.

Great colour and style. Size was perfect, a bit long for me but then I'm only 5ft. Roomy enough to wear layers. I wanted to replace the M&S version I bought 3 years ago at a much cheaper price, but it seems they do not do them anymore.
