The perfect adventure shoe

These shoes got me through a two-week trek through Peru, including the Andes and of course Machu Picchu. Dry, wet, level, rocky and everything in between with a ton of life still left in them. Didn’t need anything else.

Great Shoe for Hiking Alaska

I have a wide forefoot, so finding comfortable shoes is always a challenge. These were my first pair of Merrells, and I was nervous about ordering them online before a trip to Alaska, but they fit perfectly after a simple lace adjustment. I wore them comfortably all day on hiking trails and around town, and I highly recommend them for anyone even with wider feet.

I think they are the most comfortable shoes I've owned. I put an insert in from another pair of Merrells that gave me more support, and that worked well. I think the height of the toe box is also a factor for comfort. The Gore-tex lining allows breathing. Just came back from a trip to Greece and wore them throughout my stay.

Lots of positives, but NOT waterproof!
Originally posted on Merrell
The Moab Speed 2 Gor-Tex has a lot going for it. Very comfortable, lightweight, great traction for various hiking terrain. Why the 3/5 rating then? First a minor criticism: the laces are ridiculously short! Had to buy longer laces to be able to get the desired fit and get them to stay tied. But the huge disappointment? Absolutely NOT waterproof!! I specifically chose the version with Gor-Tex for their water resistance and was sorely disappointed, while on a 200-mile hike, to discover how wet my feet were! Thankfully, I had another pair of waterproof hiking shoes by another brand that did provide as advertised that I wore for the rest of my hike whenever rain was in the forecast. So, while I love these shoes for dry hiking, I do not recommend them if you are looking specifically for something that will provide you with water resistance.

I am a big Merrell fan and these shoes did not disappoint. Comfortable right out of the box. The fit is exactly the same as previous Merrells I have purchased.

Comfortable shoes. Hot in the summer but as expected with Gore-tex so these are my cool weather shoes.

Comfortable Light Hiking Shoes
Originally posted on Merrell
These are good light hiking shoes. I bought a half size larger because I read that they fit a little small. Could have bought regular size 10 I normally wear. Heavier socks minimize the issue and fit is good.

I really wanted to like this shoe, but it just doesn't fit well. The sole is stiffer and grippier than the Moab which is a huge plus. The shoe is lighter which is also a huge plus. However, the ankle opening is big -made for people with fat ankles. This is even more noticeable if you are wearing up a size for backpacking. If I tie them tight enough to get a good heel lock, they leave bruise marks around the top of my foot. If they fit you it's a great shoe. I can't speak to longevity - I only put about 40 miles on mine before I gave up on them.

Great shoe

Been wearing these for a while now and these things are absolute tanks on the trail. Super lightweight for a hiking shoe but still feel stable and protected on rough terrain. The GORE-TEX waterproofing actually works — feet stay dry even through wet grass, puddles, and muddy trails, while still breathing way better than most waterproof shoes I’ve owned. The comfort was noticeable right out of the box. Great cushioning, solid grip from the Vibram sole, and enough support for long hikes without my feet feeling beat up afterward. They also look clean enough to wear casually without screaming “hardcore hiking boot.” If you want something that feels fast like a trail runner but still gives the confidence of a hiking shoe, these are worth every penny. Easily one of the best all-around outdoor shoes I’ve owned.

Hoping these Moab Speed 2’s are durable!

I rated these Moab Speed 2 Shoe three stars as I love the shoes but I am concerned with Merrrell’s level of shoe quality these days. It might be a bit unfair as I will have to see if these Merrell’s hold up. The reason I think people buy multiple pairs of Merrell’s is that they used to be rock solid hiking shoes. The last couple of pairs that I have bought have disappointed me with the shoe’s durability. I hope my faith in Merrill product is re-established with this pair of Moab Speed 2’s.

Great Shoe

Bought these for a trip to Europe. Averaged 8 miles per day on city streets, cobblestones and lite hiking trails. They broke in pretty fast but it did require a minor break in period. Added my arch supports and the shoes were very comfortable. The Blue and White looking one online is actually Blue and light gray.

Horrible

I had these delivered for about a week now, wearing them on a daily work day, and Speed 2 Gore-Tex are the most uncomfortable sneaker style Merrells I have had. Not only is the support lack, if you are not double layer socked, they are going to tear your feet up. For whatever reason the fabric on the top of the shoe’s roughness goes right through to your toes and tears them apart. The shoe is not well made either, the seams are already crunching apart. I love Merrell but these are not a recommended shoe. Sorry guys

Lots of vertical space. Not good for narrower feet
Originally posted on Merrell
I tried these out and the didn't work for me. The length felt right, but there was to much vertical space with significant heal lift. I laced a heal lock loop and that fixed the heal lift. I had to crank down the laces a lot to get a snug fit and they felt uncomfortable on the top of feet. For reference I wear a narrow width in a running shoe. Merrell was great with processing the return.

Poor Fit, Done with Merrell

I tried to return these, they were definitely NOT a size 12, possibly an 11. I had worn them over a weekend on a trip and therefore could not process a return or exchange, just a 30% discount for a NEW pair in a larger size. I don't like having to buy 2 pairs of shoes to get the right size. After 25 years of Moabs, I'm done with Merrell.
